Brief summary: This book focuses on the life of a young man named Elijah. It tells of what his daily life is like. He is one of the first in his family to be born out of slavery. His family has moved to Canada where they found freedom. Elijah does not understand the true terror his family faced during slavery, but that is all about to change. A man by the name of Reverend Zephariah W. Connerly the Third steals money from Elijah's friend, Mr. Leroy. Mr. Leroy was saving the money to buy his family out of slavery. Elijah goes on a quest to get the money. It is only then does Elijah experience the true horrors of slavery.
How you would use the book with students.: This is a wonderful book to use to teach children about slavery as well as what America and Canada were like in the past. It is told from such a young character that, I feel, it would be easy for the students to relate.
